Job/Research Description
Lab technicians conduct a wide variety of experiments and tests under the supervision of the Lab Manager, including biomass pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and sugar fermentation to ethanol. Prepare experiments in biomass conversion to sugars and sugar conversion to biofuels. Operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment such as balances, centrifuges, titrators, pipetting devices, and pH meters. Operate and maintain analytical instruments, including, HPLCs, IC, ICP, GC-MS and ASE. Clean and prepare lab equipment for the next set of experiments.
Technical Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory tests: Produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations.
- Set up experiments. Work with the KL research and development team, prepare equipment for experiments, measure ingredients, etc. A thorough, reliable, detail-oriented personality is essential.
- Conduct experiments and record data. Use different types of equipment to conduct experiments and collect data.
- Prepare samples. Most experiments will require careful sample collection and preparation for future analysis.
- Report findings. Each experiment’s design and results will be documented thoroughly. While most results will only be shared internally, some results will be published in journals and/or presented at conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
- AA or BS in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, fermentation science, or related science.
- A good foundation in science with laboratory research experience (preferably wet lab) collecting and analyzing samples.
- Fluent speaker and writer in English
Physical Requirements
- Entering data while seated for greater than 1 hour
- Pushing brooms, shovels, etc
- Standing for extended periods of time
- Climbing ladders
- Opening valves
- Using wrenches to work open pipe fittings
- Occasionally lifting 50 lbs

- Must be a self-starter, highly organized, and a hard worker.
- A thorough, reliable, and detail-oriented personality.
- Good mechanical aptitude: can take things apart, troubleshoot problems, and put them back together again.
- Solid math and analysis skills.
- Must have excellent MS Office computer skills.
